Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 21, 2019

Golf

The Macomb High School girls golf team placed 6th at the IHSA State Finals in Decatur over the weekend. The Bombers shot a 2-day total of 695. Normal University is the Class 1A state champ, shooting a 619. Individually, Macomb senior Emma Thorman placed 18th overall with a 2-day, 36-hole score of 157. The Macomb High School boys also went to the finals as a team in Bloomington. The Bomber boys were in 10th place after the first round on Friday and did not qualify for championship day on Saturday. Macomb senior Blaine Sutton placed 28th individually with a 2-day score of 156.

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville and United High School volleyball teams were both crowned co-champions of the Sherrard Invitational Tournament champions. Monmouth-Roseville won their pool with a perfect record of (5-0), while United tied for the Pool B title with a record of (4-1). United won a 3-team tiebreaker against West Prairie and Mendon Unity by allowing the fewest points for the day. With all teams already playing five matches, the tournament directors did not match up the pool winners at the end of the day. Monmouth-Roseville had three ladies named to the Pool A All-Tournament team. Carly Gillen, Ryley Huston and Delaney Woodard made the list. United and West Prairie both had two girls named to the Pool B All-Tournament team. United’s Josie Bentz and Jerzi Johnson were joined by West Prairie’s Bailey Rauch and Kyah Beck. Knoxville was (2-3) for 4th place in Pool B and Ridgewood was (0-5) in Pool A.

The Galesburg Silver Streak volleyball team placed 2nd in the Limestone Fall Classic Invite. The Streaks went (4-1) for the day, losing only to tournament champions, LaSalle-Peru, on Friday night.

Cross Country

Many of our local schools took part in the Peoria Heights Patriots cross country invitational at Detweiler Park in East Peoria. Monmouth-Roseville’s Carlos Serratos placed 43rd out of 326 boy runners. Macomb placed 10th as a team out of 41 participating schools. They were led by Stan Melkumian’s 18th place finish. In the girl’s race, United’s Anne Gregory was 3rd out of 253 runners. Monmouth-Roseville was led by Stella Narkiewicz’s 47th place finish. Knoxville’s Breena Shreeves was 2nd overall. Macomb placed 6th out of 31 schools.
