Oct. 12 Game at Grinnell Canceled, Pioneers Cease Football Program for 2019

Grinnell College announced Tuesday that they will cease football operations for the remainder of the 2019 season due to a large number of injuries, in effect, cancelling their home game with Monmouth scheduled for Oct. 12.

A rash of injuries left the Pioneers with 28 of the 39 rostered players able to suit up, creating a concern for the safety of the players, some of whom may have had to play offense and defense. The decision to cease the season prior to this weekend’s scheduled games is in line with the Grinnell athletic department’s mission to put student-athlete safety first.

“Grinnell College is unwilling to compromise the health and safety of its players, including the 11 players, who over the course of the first seven weeks of practice and play, will miss some or all of the season,” said Andy Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation, in a press release issued by the College.
