GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team has been awarded a $2,000 mini-grant from the Illinois Women’s Golf Association’s Victory Fund for the fourth consecutive year.

The IWGA Victory Fund annually awards up to $20,000 to the women’s golf teams of colleges and universities throughout the state to encourage young golfers to stay involved with the sport. The Chargers have used grant funds in previous years to assist in covering the cost of tournaments, equipment, professional instruction and the use of a simulator during the winter.

Sandburg finished its fall schedule at No. 12 in Golfstat’s NJCAA rankings, which were released this week. The Chargers also had three players in the top 75 of Golfstat’s player rankings. Sophomore Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) was 35th after a fall season that saw her place no lower than sixth in Sandburg’s five tournaments, posting finishes of fifth, sixth, fifth, second and third. Sophomore Madison Newton (Erie, Ill./Erie) was 59th, and freshman Kelli Kennedy (Henry, Ill./Henry-Senachwine) was ranked 75th.

Founded in 1933, the IWGA is a volunteer organization devoted to advancing golf opportunities for the women and girls of Illinois by conducting state championship tournaments and through fundraising to support charitable contributions to individuals and organizations that embody the spirit of amateur golf.
