Carl Sandburg Women Start Season With 47-37 Victory at Elgin

Elgin, IL-Sophomore guard Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) finished a rebound shy of a double-double as the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team earned a season-opening 47-37 victory at Elgin on Thursday evening.

Whitford scored 13 points — including three 3-pointers — and grabbed a career-best nine rebounds for the Chargers (1-0). Sophomore Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) added eight points and freshman Allison Westerdahl (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) scored seven for Sandburg.

The Chargers were ahead at the end of each quarter, with leads of 9-8, 20-18 and 35-30 through the first three periods.

Elgin’s Mariel Franco had 16 points to lead all scorers.
