Diabetes Awareness Month

Share

November is Diabetes Awareness month. 30.3 million Americans have diabetes and 95 percent have Type 2, while 5 percent are diagnosed with Type 1. Pre-diabetes is also becoming more of a concern as more than 84 million have been diagnosed. Tina Canada, Diabetes Educator at OSF HealthCare Holy Family, describes symptoms to be mindful of:

“Feeling tired, especially after eating. Needing to drink more water because your mouth is dry. Having to urinate more frequently. You may have some blurred vision, especially if your blood sugar is running quite high. There are kind of vague symptoms that we put off as other things; maybe I’m just getting older or maybe I have been working a little more and I’m just a little more thirsty today,” shares Canada.

If you notice any of those symptoms, schedule a visit with your healthcare provider and get screened for pre-diabetes or diabetes. Taking action now is important to get control of a diabetes condition.
