CSC Men and Women Split a Pair of Games With McHenry County

James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) hauled in a career-high 16 rebounds for his first double-double as a Charger in the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team’s 91-82 win over McHenry County on Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. The Chargers (13-2), first among others receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, scored 16 of the last 19 in the first half to lead 46-33. Sandburg led 75-49 with 12:10 to go before the Scots (5-8) staged a late rally. McHenry County cut its deficit to 77-68 with 6:58 to play before Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) fed Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) for a 3-pointer in the left corner. The Scots got as close as 85-77 on a Connor Chynoweth trey with 2:39 to go, but the Chargers scored the next five to finish out their seventh victory in the last eight games. Jones earned his first double-double as a Charger while blowing away his previous career high of seven rebounds. The sophomore forward scored 13 on 4-of-9 shooting and led all players with 16 boards. Seven of his rebounds came on the offensive glass. After scoring a season-best 17 points in the Chargers’ last contest, freshman forward Cody Baer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) poured in 20 points while going 9 of 13 from the floor in his third consecutive double-digit outing. Gowan had 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and a game-best three steals. Freshman Vaughn Toyne (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) hit three 3s and went 4 for 4 at the free-throw line for his 13 points. Young, after sitting the last two games because of illness, had 11 points and four assists.

Women

Nineteenth-ranked McHenry County answered a big quarter by the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team with one of its own to defeat the Chargers 60-51 on Tuesday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Down 15-8 in the second quarter, the Chargers (6-7), facing their second straight ranked opponent, stormed ahead thanks to a 17-0 run and took a 28-22 lead into halftime. Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) and Faith Price (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) drained consecutive 3-pointers to start the run, and Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) had seven points in the stretch, including a go-ahead steal-and-layup. McHenry County (9-1) took the lead back with 13 of the first 15 points of the second half and held the Chargers to just one field goal in the third quarter. Sandburg scored nine straight points in the fourth to get within 50-45 with 4:00 left, but a Raquel Mills layup followed by a Grace Ozburn steal and layup extended the Scots’ lead to nine points. Lovetinsky led the Chargers in scoring and rebounding, recording 13 points and seven rebounds. The sophomore guard went 3 of 4 from 3-point range and had a team-leading three steals.
