Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 10, 2019

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted the Sherrard Tigers at the Shoebox at Monmouth-Roseville High School. Monmouth-Roseville fell behind 19-13 at the end of the first quarter behind the hot 3-point shooting of the Tigers. Sherrard hits four, 3’s in the first eight minutes. The Titans would make an adjustment and only allow 21 more total points in the final three quarters and get a 61-40 victory to go to (8-1) on the season. The Tigers could only muster one, 2nd quarter point, while the Titan offense got untracked and scored 22 points, nine of those by Lily Cundiff. Biancha Luna led a balanced scoring attack for Monmouth-Roseville with 13 points. Carly Gillen and Cundiff would end the night with 12 points apiece and Ryley Huston was also in double figures for the Titans with 11. Mattie Gillen scored 11 points for the Monmouth-Roseville JV squad in a 35-25 win over the Tigers in first game of the night. Monmouth-Roseville gets right back on the floor tonight with another home against (4-3) Kewanee.

The United Red Storm girls basketball team won four games all of last season but have already garnered three wins this season as the Red Storm knock off Galva 48-35 in a Lincoln Trail Conference contest at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Lady Storm improve to (3-6) on the season and (1-0) in conference play. Courtney Hinton led United with 12 points. Also in double figures for United was Keirstyn Johnson and Ariana Villareal with 11 points apiece. United won the JV game 39-11. The Red Storm girls will host Rushville-Industry tonight at 6:30 at United High School. The game will be played directly before the Red Storm boys varsity contest vs. St. Joseph College High School of Australia at 8:00.

The West Central Heat girls traveled to Wethersfield High School in Kewanee for an LTC match up. The Flying Geese beat the Heat 57-49.

Other girls basketball finals last night, include state-ranked Lewistown over Abingdon-Avon 75-36. Emma Ginther led A-Town with 13 points.

Knoxville defeated Farmington 51-29 and it was BPC over Macomb 73-57.

In boys high school basketball, the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes hosted the travel team from Australia, the St. Joseph Joeys. The Tornadoes win the game 57-36. Ryan Adolphson led A-Town with 16 points.

The United Red Storm JV boys basketball team won the consolation championship of the Galva JV Tournament with a 63-55 win over the host Wildcats. The West Central Heat won the championship game, 57-39 over Wethersfield.

Junior High

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans travelled to Sherrard to face the Tigers in Prairieland Conference play. The 7th grade Titans won 53-33. Leading Titan scorers were Andy Myers with 14, Payron Thompson with 12 and Ethan Clark chipped in with 10. The 8th grade fell to Sherrard 40-33. Nico Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville with 12.

The United Red Storm boys went to Williamsfield to take on the Bombers. The Red Storm get a sweep on the night, with the 7th grade winning 29-28 behind Elliott Copeland’s 18 points. The Red Storm 8th grade wins 33-13. Hunter Hall led United with 11 points.
