Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 11th, 2019

Basketball

The United Red Storm girls varsity basketball team equaled their win total of all last year already, getting their fourth victory against six losses after their 50-37 win over Rushville/Industry. A 13-2 run starting the second half by United blew open a close game. Courtney Hinton led United with 14 points and Luci Kane was just behind with 13.

Following the girls game, the United boys basketball team took on a travel team from Sydney, Australia, the St. Joseph Joeys. The Red Storm get a 53-46 come-from-behind victory over the Joeys. United was led by Declan Flynn, who had 16 points. Senior Evan Wynne chipped in 14 points, and Jacob Dutton finished with 13. United improves to (6-2) with the win.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team took on Illini West in Carthage. It was all Monmouth-Roseville from the opening tip as they opened up by scoring the first nine points within a minute and a half. The Titans widened the lead throughout game and ended the night with a 77-45 win. Rashaun King led Monmouth-Roseville with 23 points and Reese Kane contributed 17 points to the victory. Ten players hit the scoring column for Monmouth-Roseville, who is now (4-3) overall on the season. Illini West falls to (0-7).

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team completed a successful night of basketball for Monmouth-metro teams as the Lady Titans also had no trouble with the Kewanee Boilermakers, winning 72-36. Monmouth-Roseville led the game 44-15 at the half. For the second straight game, it was a balanced scoring attack that did the job. Kelci Shelton had a season-high 17 points. Behind her in scoring was Carly Gillen and Lily Cundiff with 15 points each. Monmouth-Roseville is now (9-1) overall.

The West Central Heat boys basketball team fell to Bushnell-Prairie City 62-56. A 15-6 scoring disadvantage for the Heat in the 3rd quarter put them in a hole they weren’t able to get out of. Nate Bigger led West Central with 19 points and Landen Beelman had 18 for the Heat as well.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks put 92 points up on newest Western Big Six Conference member Sterling in a 92-76 win. Jaylin McCants scored 41 points for Galesburg, said to be the highest point total in a Big Six Conference game since 2009. He was helped out by 23 points from Eric Price. The Streaks are (5-1) overall.

Also, the Knoxville boys are (4-2) after their blowout 78-38 victory over Stark County. David Hise had 15 to lead the winning Blue Bullets.

Farmington knocked off Macomb 48-43. With the loss, Macomb falls to (1-5).

Junior High

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted Rockridge in Roseville. The 7th grade Titans were on the wrong end of a 51-14 score in the first game of the night. Leading the way for Monmouth-Roseville was Martwan Butler and Andy Myers with 4 points each. The 8th grade Titans also lost 55-24 to the Rockets. Nico Avendano and Rhett Willett had 6 points each.

The ICS boys played in the semifinal round of the Sand Valley Conference tournament tonight in Stronghurst last night. The ICS 7th grade will play for the championship tomorrow night after beating LaHarpe/Dallas City 32-24. Steven Gibbs had 12 points and Nick Huston had 11 for ICS. The ICS 8th grade lost to North Fulton 43-31. Leo Mahoney had ten to lead the Trojans.
