GALESBURG, Illinois— The Knox College women’s golf program has been awarded a $2,000 mini-grant from the Illinois Women’s Golf Association (IWGA).

The IWGA Victory Fund annually awards up to $20,000 to the women’s golf teams of colleges and universities throughout the state to encourage young golfers to stay involved with the sport. The Prairie Fire will use their grant for new equipment, training aids, and other instructional materials.

“We cannot thank the IWGA enough for allowing us to receive this grant,” said head coach KC Harding. “We will use this to enhance the players experience here at Knox College.”

The Prairie Fire completed their first fall of competing in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) in the fall. The team placed fifth at the SLIAC Championship and Shelby Keen and Sam Nichols both picked up All-Conference honors. Keen placed third overall after carding a 157 over two rounds. Nichols finished in ninth place with 164 total strokes, making her a four-time All-Conference performer. First-year Mariah Barlow also earned a spot on the All-Sportsmanship Team

Founded in 1933, the IWGA is a volunteer organization devoted to advancing golf opportunities for the women and girls of Illinois by conducting state championship tournaments and through fundraising to support charitable contributions to individuals and organizations that embody the spirit of amateur golf.
