The Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament started last night in Alwood. The tournament is a seeded pool-play format with cross-over championship day set for Saturday, January 25th at Alwood High School. There were four games played last night, with two in the high school gym and two in the junior high gymnasium. Top-seed Princeville took on United at the high school gym. The Lady Princes jumped out to an 18-3 lead at the end of the first period and went on for a 61-29 win. Natalie King led United with 11 points and Jennifer Shimmin chipped in with eight for the Red Storm as well. Princeville is now (19-3) overall. Also in the high school gym it was Annawan over Ridgewood 51-35. Annawan’s Keegan Rico led all scorers with 25 points. Brecken Adamson had 14 for Ridgewood. In the junior high gym, 2nd seed Mercer County defeated Galva 53-35. Shalyn Lucas led a balanced scoring attack for Mer Co with 13 points. Finally, Stark County beat Wethersfield 39-34 in the closest decision of the night. Olivia Hopp had 15 for Stark and Lexi Nichols led Wethersfield with 15 as well. The tournament continues on Saturday with four more games.
Also in high school girls basketball last night, Galesburg hosted Geneseo in a Western Big Six Conference match up at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg. The Streaks fell behind 17-11 at the end of the first eight minutes and stayed within striking distance of the Lady Leafs at 33-25 at the half but were outscored 34-17 in the final two periods. Geneseo remains the lone undefeated team in the Western Big Six at (8-0) with a 67-43 win. Galesburg got 14 points from Lauren Livingston but the leading average scorer for Galesburg, Riley Jenkins, was held to three points, all from the free throw line. Galesburg is (3-5) in conference play and now (13-8) overall.
The Camp Point Central/Southeastern Girls basketball classic continued last night in Camp Point. There were four games played. West Hancock fell to Liberty 74-71. The hosts, Lady Panthers lost to Pleasant Plains 47-40. Mendon Unity was beaten by Brown County 33-26 and Quincy came back to beat South Fulton 47-43. The tourney continues tonight and tomorrow night and finishes up on Saturday.
Junior High
In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans traveled to Rockridge for a pair of games in the Prairieland Conference. The 7th grade Titans fell to the Rockets 47-12. Leading Titan Scorer: Ethan Clark 6. The 8th grade Titans fell 66-31 to the Rockets. Leading Titan Scorer: Tyler Finnicum 7
The United Junior High boys basketball teams split a pair of games in Annawan last night. The Red Storm 7th grade lost 31-24. They were led by Zeke Clark’s 11 points. The United 8th grade salvaged the split by beating the Braves 31-14. Keaton Simpson led United with 10 points.
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan junior high wrestling team started off their season with a few wins against Quincy last night. Those wins included a pin from Bawi Thang, Alejandro Morales and Jekxel Rivera. Frankie Wise and Jorge Roman both earned decision wins. Against Macomb, Jekzel Rivera, Rogelio Meza, Curtis Blackman and Jorge Roman all earned wins via pin-fall. Gabe Ortiz-Mora won major decision also. The Titans came out on top of Macomb 28-24. The Titans will travel to Galesburg next Tuesday.
