Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 20, 2020

Basketball

The Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament continued in Woodhull. Three of the four games that were on the schedule were played with the United vs. Ridgewood contest postponed to today. The West Central Heat lost to Annawan 60-45. Mady Reed led West Central in the loss with 22 points. Emily Miller had 18 for Annawan. It was West Central’s first pool play game and Annawan is (2-0) in pool A. Also Stark County knocked off Galva 56-38. Kelsey Berchtold led a balanced scoring attack for Stark with 14 points. Stark leads Pool B with a (2-0) record. Finally Wethersfield beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 49-40. Lexi Nichols led all scorers with 20 points for Wethersfield. The top-seeds, Princeville and Mercer County had the day off. Today’s schedule begins with the United vs. Ridgewood makeup game at 4:30 in the high school gym at Alwood High School. Also in the high school gym is Galva and Wethersfeild at 6:00 and then Ridgewood vs. Princeville at 7:30. In the junior high gym, ROWVA plays Mercer County at 6:00, followed by United and West Central at 7:30.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys and girls took part in tournaments on Saturday. The Silver Streak boys won a pair of games against Chicago Comer Prep and Danville. The Streaks beat Comer Prep 76-53 behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Jaylin McCants and 16 points from Eric Price. It was McCants leading the way again in his team’s 76-56 win over Danville in the nightcap. He had another double-double of 27 points and ten rebounds. Price had 18 points and Rylee Milan chipped in with 14. Galesburg is now (18-2) overall.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls lost a pair of games to quality competition in the Downstate Classic at Morton High School. The Lady Streaks fell to Peoria 60-40 in their first game and 56-33 to the state’s top Class 3A team according to the latest poll, Morton. Audree Peck and Riley Jenkins led Galesburg in the first game with ten points apiece. It was Lauren Livingston with 10 points in the loss to Morton. Galesburg is (13-10) overall.

Junior High

The Warren County Thunder Youth Wrestling Club took part in the New London Tiger Wrestling tournament. With just 8 wrestlers the team finished 5th out of 15 programs. The Thunder is a mix of kids from the Monmouth-Roseville, United and West Central school districts. Getting 1st place was Keegan Smith and Izak Greenlief. Getting runnerup medals were Jaxon Reighard, Hunter Conchas, Aydenn Dean and Brody Butler. Maddie Cook and Caden Reighard each got 4th place. Landon Peterson wrestled at the Davenport Assumption Touranment and earned a first place medal.
