MONMOUTH, IL – The Scots atoned for Friday’s cold shooting, canning half their shots in a 70-60 win over Beloit Saturday afternoon to break a four-game skid.

D.J. Swift pumped in a game-high 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Dee Hyler added 15 to push the Scots back into the win column. Swift opened the game with a 3-pointer and added a deuce on the next possession for a quick 5-0 lead. Beloit came back as the teams traded the lead until Swift’s 3-ball at the 9:18 mark of the first half as Monmouth never trailed from that point on.

The Buccaneers rallied in the second half, but could only tie Monmouth in the first five minutes of the final period. Swift’s bucket in the lane with 14:10 left in the game broke a 42-all tie and sparked an 8-0 run, finished off by Hyler’s 3-pointer. The Bucs closed the gap again, pulling within 50-47 at the 10:08 mark before Alec Hayes scored a pair of back-to-back buckets inside to open the gap. Nursing a 66-60 lead in the final minute, Justin Batterton and Jake Rueter each went 2-for-2 from the line to ice the game.

Monmouth hits the road to Grinnell for a 5:30 contest on Wednesday.

Women

MONMOUTH, IL – The Scots never trailed as Becca Gallis poured in a game-high 21 points in Saturday’s 76-52 win over Beloit at Glennie Gym.

Yvonne Ornelas put Monmouth on top with a pair of free throws in the opening minute to set the tone as the Scots opened up a 16-12 first quarter lead. Monmouth stretched the lead to nine at 24-15 on Kaitlyn Osmulski’s bucket in the lane, but the Buccaneers kept the game in single digits for the remainder of the first half, closed out by two more Ornelas free throws.

Monmouth’s defense took over in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 34-27 lead and expanding it to 23-point gap by the end of the period with a 56-33 lead after holding the Bucs to six points. The Scots’ lead grew to as many as 33 in the final frame when Tarae Warner’s short jumper gave Monmouth a 74-41 lead.

The Scots, which also got double figures form Carley Turnbull (12) and Jordan Kintigh (10) travel to Grinnell for a 7:30 matchup Wednesday night.
