Mr. Roy Dean Akin, 78 of Galesburg, died at 7:33 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2020 at his home.

He was born June 23, 1941 in Griggsville, Pike County, Illinois, the son of Charles A. Akin, Sr. and Erma Alene Brooke Akin.  He married Karen Bobb on October 22, 1970 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  She preceded him in death on May 13, 2013.  He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Dean is survived by one son, Joseph Akin of Galesburg; one daughter, Kristy Akin of Galesburg; two brothers, Charles Akin, Jr. of Rushville and Larry Akin of Knoxville; and one aunt, five cousins and nieces and nephews.  

He was raised in Griggsville and graduated from Griggsville High School in 1960.  In 1967 he enlisted in the US Army and spent time in Vietnam during the war.  Upon discharge from the military, he had lived in Abingdon and Galesburg.  He worked 31 years as a laborer for the Maytag Corporation, retiring in 2000 and later worked at Hy-Vee on East Main Street for 13 years.  He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon.  He was a former member of the Abingdon Kiwanis Club.  He was happiest when he was mushroom hunting, gardening and working with his flowers.  He enjoyed the company of his dog, Deano.  He was a Chicago Cubs fan.

Private services will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Galesburg Chapel with Deacon Michael Crummer officiating.  Burial with military rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 of Abingdon will follow at East Linwood Cemetery.
