Michael P. “Mike” Karssen, 60, of Galesburg, passed away with his family at his side on Thursday, October 15, 2020, 2:13 AM, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

Mike was born on October 31, 1959, in Le Mars, Iowa. He was the son of Bernard “Dutch” and Carol (Ver Hoef) Karssen. Mike married Susie Hutson on June 4, 1988 in Galesburg. Mike is survived by his mother, Carol of Le Mars; his three children, Kassie Karssen of Hanover, IN, Katie Karssen of Wellington, FL, and Kaleb (Emily) Karssen of Camp Pendleton; his sister LeAnn DeJoode of Belvidere; and his beloved ‘66 Chevy Nova. He was preceded in death by his father; and sister, Lori Karssen.

Mike attended Le Mars Community Schools. He received his Associates degree from Western Iowa Tech. Mike was a Design Engineer for L&T Tech Services (formerly Dell). Mike was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Galesburg. He loved riding his Harley and was a proud “Hog Member.” Mike was also a fan of NHRA Racing and was currently working on turning his classic car into a drag racer. He was an advocate for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and enjoyed the area St. Jude Poker Run and the Memphis Run. Mike’s life revolved around his children. He was a proud, supportive, and doting father. He made sure to make time to attend their every event and be their loudest cheerleader.

Even in death Mike’s love and giving spirit will live on through his decision of becoming an organ donor for Gift of Hope.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020 from 12 – 3 PM at Big Catz BBQ, 221 E. Main Street, Knoxville, Illinois 61448. Arrangements have been entrusted with Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Knoxville. Memorials may be donated to Gift of Hope, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and the Wounded Warriors Project. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, face masks, social distancing and attendance limitations will be required. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.hurd-hendricks.com.
