Mr. Virgil V. VanWinkle, 94, of Maquon, Illinois passed away at 9:30 pm Friday, November 27, 2020 at the Knox County Nursing Home.

Virgil was born May 8, 1926 in Plymouth, Illinois the son of Thomas VanWinkle and Susie Osborne. He married Barbara E. Dugan on February 2, 1946 in Knoxville, Illinois and a week later left to serve his country in the US Army in Japan during WWII.

On his return, Virgil and Barbara began to expand their family. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Richard (Lori) VanWinkle of Maquon, Karen Fograscher of Peoria and L. Michelle (Phil) King of Waverly, Illinois; seven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and his dear friends, Leon and Carol Monical and their family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his son, William VanWinkle in 2019, his grandson, Billy VanWinkle in 2018 and many brothers and sisters. 

Virgil farmed his entire life, with his son, Rick on the family farm. Virgil retired as a rural postal carrier serving the Maquon area for many years. He and Barbara enjoyed going out dancing and had taken many dance classes to improve their moves. Virgil loved to bowl, participating on several bowling leagues. He was a member of the local Antique Car Clubs.  He was honored to have been included in an Honor Flight service and was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Virgil’s greatest love was his family, whether it was lending a hand or simply spending time together.

Private family graveside services will be held in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
