The IHSA will crown a state champ this weekend, the first one since last March. It will be in chess, in a virtual format says Eric Czerwin with the Illinois Chess Coaches Association.

Chicago-area schools have dominated the State Tournament, particularly perrenial top-five finishers Lincolnshire-Stevenson and Chicago Whitney Young. The virtual state chess series runs today and tomorrow.

The IHSA crowned its first state chess champion in 1975, with the first champs being Aurora Central Catholic in Class A and New Trier East in Class AA. The tournament was switched to a one-class system in 1995, a year in which Moline High School claimed the title. Sherrard won the Class A championship in 1982.
