Freeport, IL – The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team capped a sweep in thrilling fashion Wednesday night as the Chargers defeated Highland 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 in their season opener.
Trailing 23-17 in the third set, Sandburg (1-0) won the next eight points to close out the match.
Freshman Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) led a balanced Chargers attack with eight kills on 23 attacks. Freshmen Megan Crome (Marshall, Ill./Marshall), Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) and Grace Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) each added seven kills for Sandburg.
Rademaker led the Chargers with 12 digs, while Reeves-Eakins and sophomore libero Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) each picked up 11 digs. Sophomore setter Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) had 23 assists for the Chargers, and Johnson posted two blocks.
Sophomore Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./home-schooled) served three of the six aces for Sandburg, which was playing for the first time in 466 days.
