The Monmouth American Legion post 136 opened after WW1 and continues to host community events and service programs. Cheri Stanton from the Monmouth American Legion shares the organizations history:
“The American Legion was helpful in starting the VA system and getting that into place. Then they wanted to work on something that did a job for the children and youth of fallen soldiers so we have done scholarships and things like that. We try to work on programs that involve the children of fallen soldiers. We work on Americanism and still lobbying for different bills to be passed and as a result of that they passed the GI bill.”
The bar and restaurant are open to the public for carry out and limited dine-in seating. They serve tenderloins, catfish, and sandwiches and are hoping to restart the soup supper in March.
