Names Released in Fatal Bicycle Versus Vehicle Crash in Henry County

The below is an update to the fatal crash that occurred on 05/03/24 south of Kewanee.**

Preliminary investigation shows a 2005 Dodge Magnum, driven by 20-year-old, Darren Chamberlain, of Kewanee was traveling south on US Highway 34 south of Kewanee. As the vehicle traveled south, the vehicle struck a bicyclist who was also traveling south on US Highway 34. Darren Chamberlain and a passenger of the vehicle declined medical attention at the scene.

The bicyclist, 31 year-old, Tyler L. Bliss, of Kewanee, was fatally injured in the crash. Henry County Deputies arrived on scene and immediately began life saving measures. Tyler was transported by Kewanee Fire Department for life-threatening injuries to OSF-Saint Luke’s Hospital located in Kewanee where he was later pronounced dead.

The Henry County Coroner’s Office responded and is directly involved in the incident. The release of information was a joint effort between the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the Henry County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle received a citation for unlawful overtaking of a bicycle. (625 ILCS 5/11-703).

The crash remains under investigation by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. No additional information will be released at this time.

A bicyclist is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Henry County.  Authorities say the incident happened Friday night in the 33-hundred block of Route 34.  The bicyclist was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.  The incident is under investigation.
