Galesburg, IL – Heartland took control late in each of the first two sets and went on to sweep the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team 25-20, 25-22, 25-12 on Wednesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Sandburg (4-5) led 13-10 in the first set after a block by Megan Crome (Marshall, Ill./Marshall) before the Hawks (8-2), who won their sixth in a row, put together a 5-0 run to take the lead in the set for good. Chargers setter Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) fed Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) for a kill to make it 18-16, but Heartland pulled away by winning five of the next six points.

The Chargers led 21-19 in the second after a kill by Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central), but Heartland took six of the last seven in the set to go up two sets to none. Sandburg tied it at 22 with an Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./homeschooled) kill before the Hawks won the final three points.

Heartland won the opening three points and eight of the first 11 en route to taking the third set.

Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) had nine kills for the Chargers. Crome put down four kills in the opening set, and her six for the match were one away from matching her season-high.

Chiaravalle had 20 assists and led the Chargers with 15 digs, her most this season. Libero Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) added 11 digs. Reeves-Eakins, Chiaravalle, McKim and Johnson each had two blocks for the Chargers.
