Discussions continue on the future of the Warren County jail. Citizens Advisory Committee Chair Chip Algren informs the committee will present to the County Board a half percent public facilities tax with a built in sunset clause which would then be presented to voters. According to pre-COVID numbers, Algren anticipates the payback of a $10 million project to be between 20 to 25 years:
If the referendum were to pass, Algren says farm equipment, motor vehicles, prescription drugs, and basic food items at the grocery store would be exempt from the tax. As for the existing Sheriff’s Office and jail, the Citizens Advisory Committee is recommending the building be demolished and a parking lot be put in its’ place for public use.
