Mildred Lois (Apt) Melvin, age 98, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2021 in the First Christian Church in Burlington. A funeral service will follow. Burial will be in the Terre Haute Cemetery, Terre Haute, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church and Child Fund International. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting the family.
Mildred was born at home in rural Stronghurst, the daughter of Clarence and Mae Ingram Apt. She attended country schools and Terre Haute High School. On October 12, 1938, she married Lester Melvin in Burlington, IA. They moved to a farm near Raritan, IL, where they lived until 1982, when they moved to Burlington. Lester preceded her in death on February 6, 2001.
Mildred was employed by the Burlington Medical Center and Great River Medical Center for over thirty years, retiring in 2008. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Burlington. She loved road trips, antiquing, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her son; Ronald (Jean) Melvin, two grandchildren; Lori (Gary) Whitehall and Jon (Heidi) Melvin, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, one brother; Frank Melvin, one sister; Mary Shallenberger, and one grandson; Michael Melvin.
