Sheriff’s Office On Lookout for Car Parts Thievery

For the past three years Illinois has been among the top five states in the number of thefts of catalytic converters, the emissions control device located in your car’s exhaust system whose value is high because of its precious metals content.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards is aware of this uptick in crime, especially in rural areas.

“That has been an ongoing problem,” Edwards said. “You might remember up in the (Quad) Cities last year, people were going out to the airport and whacking them off cars. And we’ve had that happen throughout the county.”

No matter where you’re at — in the city or in the country — Sheriff Edwards emphasizes the importance of securing your property at all times.

“Back in the day, we left everything sitting outside with the keys in ’em,” Edwards said. “We can’t do that anymore. If you have the shed space, get it inside and get it locked up.

“It doesn’t take long for these people to become well-practiced. If you see someone outside lurking around, try to get a license plate and give it to us.”
