Illinois is expanding protections for students’ religious freedom and adding a school holiday. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed legislation yesterday that will excuse students from public school days for religious reasons such as holidays or for religious instruction. The laws will also allows students participating in religious fasting to be excused from physical education class activities. A separate law will require history courses to include the study of contributions by Americans of different faith practices, and it makes Muhammad Ali’s birthday on January 17th a commemorative school holiday.
