On Thursday night the ICS Trojans 8th grade boys won the IESA 1A regional championship over Costa by the score of 38-37. The Trojans had slipped by Costa a few weeks back so everyone in attendance new this one would be a fight to the finish and both teams made sure of it. The Trojans started out well as Andrew Way had 6 and Alex Simmons 4 in the first period as ICS led 15-9. Both teams struggled in the second as the Trojans outscored Costa 6-5 to lead 21-14 at the half. Costa got one back in the third as they used a 6-5 advantage to cut the Trojan lead to 26-20. What may have seemed like a Trojan win was going to be challenged as Costa put together their best quarter of the evening outscoring the Trojans 17-12 but 8 points from Andrew Way, 2 from Clay Casteel and 2 big free throws from Nick Huston helped hold off the charge and send the Trojan section of fans into a huge celebration. Andrew Way led the Trojans with 20 but his supporting group chipped in big Thursday as point guard Clay Casteel added 7, Alex Simmons chipped in 5 huge points, Nick Huston was solid with 4 and big man Elijah Noel added 2. The Trojans will take their regional championship and advance to the Williamsfield sectional next week.
