Brian Woodard named new Fighting Scots Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Head Coach
Monmouth College’s Roger Haynes, a 53-time Midwest Conference Track and Field Coach of the Year, recently stepped down from the position of head coach of the Fighting Scots Men’s and Women’s Track and Field. Just last month, Haynes was awarded the conference’s women’s coach of the year, following the Scots’ women’s outdoor team title.
Long-time assistant coach to Haynes, Brian Woodard, was named the new head coach of both track and field squads. Haynes had been the head coach of the Monmouth men’s track program for 38 seasons and head coach of the women’s team for the past 22 years. He has also been the Director of Athletics for the past 14 years, overseeing Monmouth’s 20 intercollegiate varsity teams that compete in the Midwest Conference, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference.
With the plethora of varsity sports in action and four different conference affiliations, Haynes’ time in the AD office had been taking time away from the hours he had been able to devote to his track programs and Haynes says it was simply time for a change at the coaching position. He is looking forward to the challenges of devoting more time to all the sports programs at the college.
Haynes was named the U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association Men’s Indoor National Coach of the Year in 2007 and named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2016. His replacement is also a national coach of year. During his Monmouth tenure as an assistant, Woodard has coached 28 All-Americans and six current conference record-holders. He was named National Indoor Track and Field Women’s Assistant Coach in 2013 and has twice been named to the same honor in the Midwest Region of U.S. Track and Field.
With the amount of time that Woodard has put into the program through the years at Haynes’ side, he doesn’t expect to make to many changes to an already successful program.
