Fatal accident near Annawan on Wednesday

A 68-year-old female from Mattoon was killed in a fatal accident in Henry County around 2:20 Wednesday (7/20) afternoon. According to the Illinois State Police, a vehicle driven by 78-year-old Craig Ewald from Varna was traveling on Interstate 80 near Annawan and exited at milepost 33. While on the exit ramp, the SUV left the roadway to the left and overturned. Ewald and front seat passenger 71-year-old Martha Allen also from Varna were flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. The rear passenger was pronounced deceased on scene by the Henry County Coroner. The ramp was closed for approximately five hours during the crash investigation. The driver was cited for Improper Lane Usage.
