Shirley Winchel Green, 93 of Abingdon, passed away at 6:18 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the Macomb Post Acute Care Center in Macomb, Illinois.

  She was born December 21, 1928 in Abingdon, the daughter of Sherman and Izell (Peterson) Winchel.  She married Wayne A. Green on March 30, 1947 in Abingdon.

  Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Wayne; one daughter, Vicki Green of Macomb; one sister, Georgia Weaver of Chicago; several nieces, nephews and their families; and special friend, Linda Elsea.  The family would also like to thank a friend and home nurse, Jana Palmer, for all her care and visits.

  She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Mary Winchel, and sister, Freda Oliver.

  She has lived in Abingdon most all of her life.  She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1946 and was the Salutatorian of her class.  She was a member of the Abingdon High School Half-Century Alumni.  She was a 75 plus year member of the Abingdon Christian Church and served as a deaconess and board secretary for many years.  She was a former member of the Junior Women’s and Women’s Club and the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Post #381 Auxiliary.  She worked as the Sales Secretary at American Sanitary Company in Abingdon for 25 years and later at Galesburg Malleable for 15 years, retiring in 1987.  Shirley and Wayne have been avid sports fans for years.

  Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 S. Main St. in Abingdon.  Pastor Linda Mowrer will officiate.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
