Dorothy “Dot” Evelyn Mitchell, 99, of Galesburg, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born November 16, 1923, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, the daughter of Harry Glenwood and Evelyn Regina (Langford) Bainbridge. She married Robert Clark Mitchell on June 11, 1949, in Denver, Colorado. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1999 after 50 years of marriage.
She is survived by three children, twins, Robert C. (Deb) Mitchell of Maquon and Rebecca L. (Zack) Wessels of Galesburg and Debra A. Carr of Nokomis, Florida; five grandchildren, Jennifer Carr Neff, Wade (Kellie) Wessels, R.J. (Jessica) Mitchell, Brittney (Don) Infinger, and Jesse (Jamy) Mitchell; eight great grandchildren, Chase Neff, Gage Neff, Charlize Wessels, Chazie Infinger, Luke Infinger, Weston Mitchell, Jake Mitchell, and Kelsie Mitchell; a niece, Amy (Rich) Wuthrich; and a nephew, Jack (Mary Carol) Bainbridge. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her only brother, Harry “Bernie” Bainbridge; a grandson, Seth Mitchell; her companion, Jim “Bud” Holloway; and her beloved dog, Bo.
Dot was a 1941 graduate of Galesburg High School. She was life-long member of First Presbyterian Church. Dot was also a member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and the Moose Lodge.
Dot started working as a window trimmer for Black and Kuhl. She was the first in Galesburg to trim windows and later in Peoria and Moline. She then worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for 11 years and then was head bookkeeper at the Bank of Galesburg for several years before retiring. She earned banking certifications from Knox College and Carl Sandburg College.
Cremation will be accorded. A service and burial in the Henderson Cemetery will be announced at a later date, with a celebration of life to follow.
