Academics and social skills were a challenge through the pandemic for local schools

Through the Covid-19 pandemic, students nationwide and here in Illinois found themselves having to learn remotely or in a different environment than they were accustomed.  Central Intermediate Principal Andrea Frieden says it’s been a challenge but they are working hard to help students:

“We’re just gonna keep working really hard. I mean we have a lot of great things going, we’ve implemented a lot of things this year. Unfortunately, I know people are tired of hearing this, but Covid really did make our academics really hard right now. It’s a challenge. We’re going to do everything we can for our students to make sure our students are where they need to be to move on.”

Frieden says Academics wasn’t the only thing that suffered.

“It was their social skills because they didn’t get to be with each other, so, we have some of those things in place as well. Try to have those celebrations were they can have that time together just to learn those social skills. Because you don’t learn it unless you do it.”

According to data from the Institute of Educational Sciences, 80% of schools in the survey said their students suffered from “stunted behavioral and sociemotional development because of the pandemic, a 56% increase in disruptions from student misconduct and a 55% increase in student tardiness.
