On January 20, 2023 Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy S. Karlin filed a criminal information against Nathan Cantu and Rey Cantu for their roles in an August 21, 2022 arson at an apartment complex on Springer Road in Galesburg. A carport and nine vehicles were damaged as a result of the intentionally-set fire. The two defendants were charged with 10 counts of arson as a result of the property damage.

At their first appearances, Circuit Judge James Standard set the defendants’ bail at $200,000. Each defendant is required to post $20,000 to obtain their release in these cases.  The defendants have been in custody since August 26, 2022 when local law enforcement executed arrest warrants where the defendants were living in Wataga, Illinois.  Both defendants have pending charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and criminal damage to property. Jury trials in the pending cases are expected to take place in February.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin is committed to making our community safe through evidence-based prosecution and equal justice for all. This means guaranteeing a fair process to obtain a just result for the victim, the accused and the community in every case. The defendants are presumed innocent of all charges.
