Mrs. Mary E. Haynes, 91 of Galesburg, formerly of St. Augustine, died at 12:52 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2023, in the emergency room of OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

She was born Sunday, June 21, 1931, the daughter of Henry and Irene (Weir) McVay. She married Donald “Weasel” M. Haynes on March 17, 1951, in Avon. He preceded her in death on February 20, 2021, after nearly 70 years of marriage.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (the late Larry) Dumse of Galesburg, Larry (Jennifer) Haynes of Avon, Audrey (the late Jeff) Creek of Galesburg, and Sally (Mike) Hillman of East Galesburg; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Patsy A. Nutt; and two brothers, Paul and Glen McVay. Her daughter, Cathy Haynes, died later in the day on March 17, 2023.

Mary and Donald lived on the farm in rural St. Augustine for most of their married life before moving to Galesburg in 2009. There Mary would concentrate on raising her family, helping on the farm, sewing, crafting, gardening, and canning. She also worked outside the home at the bank in Avon and at Shank’s Shoe Store in Abingdon. Mary sold Tupperware for many years. Like her daughter, Cathy, Mary loved to shop and collect clothes and shoes. She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan. In her younger years, she was a member of the Abingdon Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Cremation will be accorded. Joint visitation for Mary and Donald and their daughter, Cathy, will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Burial for Donald and Mary will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery, where Military Honors will be offered for Donald. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
