Hancock County Deputies Respond to Report of Man in the Mississippi River

Hancock County Sheriff Travis Duffy reports that on April 11, 2023 the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a tipped over canoe and a man in the water on the Mississippi River at Highway 96 and County Road 1720N.

Deputies responded along with Hamilton Police, Nauvoo Fire and Rescue, Hamilton Fire Department, Hancock County EMS, Illinois Conservation Police, and AirEvac.

Unfortunately, the victim had drowned.

Deputies investigated and discovered the victim was Ronald G. McVeigh, age 69, or rural Nauvoo, IL.

Illinois Conservation Police and Lee County Sheriff’s Office began recovery efforts. Later that evening Quincy Emergency Volunteer Corps joined the recovery efforts.

The victim was located and recovered at 11:30 AM on April 12, 2023 by Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Quincy Emergency Volunteer Corps, and Illinois Conservation Police. They were assisted by the Hancock County Coroner.
