June is Men’s Health Month

Share

The McDonough County Health Department (MCHD) is recognizing June as Men’s Health Month. Men’s Health Month is a time to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men.

On average, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), men die about five years earlier than women and have higher mortality rates from some cancers and heart disease. This month MCHD is urging men to use all the tools in their toolbox to improve their health.

  • Get regular screenings and talk to your healthcare provider. Have an open and honest
conversation about your health and do the screenings and tests recommended. Knowing
your numbers like cholesterol and blood pressure and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) are
important. MCHD is offering a PSA for only $50 for the entire month of June. Call
    (309) 837-9951 ext. 2270 to schedule.
  • Eat healthier foods. Healthier food choices build a healthier heart and help battle obesity.
Make fruits and vegetables half of your plate.
  • Get active. Fitting just 30 minutes of exercise into each day has been shown to keep men
healthier and help them live longer.
  • Quit tobacco and vaping. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke and increases the
likelihood of erectile dysfunction. The Illinois Tobacco Quitline can help.
    Call 866-QUIT-YES.
  • Mental health affects physical health. Life can be tough and thinking things through with
a mental health professional can help. Call or text 988 24/7/365 for help or to get
connected with someone who can help.
