During last week’s United Board of Education meeting, the members toured the West Elementary and Junior High buildings before having a continued discussion on the need for more classroom space due to the addition of new programs and sharing classrooms with Knox-Warren. Superintendent Jeff Whitsitt shares one possibility to freeing up classrooms at the elementary buildings, the Board discussed the possibility of moving the four 5th Grade sections to the Junior High:
“We are just busting at the seams for space and it is not that our enrollment has exploded so much, it is that we have added some additional opportunities for kids and things that take up some of the room we had and we have run out. We are providing some space for some Knox-Warren classrooms we share. We have added pre-k classrooms to our roster. We have seen a need developing for more in-depth and more individual and small group reading instruction so we have added some staffing for that and before you know it, you have used up all the space you’ve got in every building you’ve got. So now we are in the process of looking at ways to alleviate some of that pressure and still provide us some flexible space. A real simple idea that we considered would be moving our 5th Grades out of the elementary and moving them to our Junior High. None of it is just made for it, there are some things that would have to happen, whether it be some renovation or construction.”
Additionally, the United Board of Education passed a resolution appointing Tina Guild to the Board, following the resignation of Amelia Tierney.
