On August 23, 2023, a Knox County jury rendered a verdict of guilt against Donald Denniston on charges of First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Arson, and Arson related to a house fire that occurred on February 14, 2021. The fire was reported at approximately 12:45 a.m. on February 14th, in the 200 block of Pine Street, where two individuals were present during the incident: a 50-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman. The male victim managed to escape with burn injuries, while the woman, identified as Katrina Hainline, lost her life within the residence. Following a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for ninety minutes before reaching a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts. Denniston will remain in custody until his sentencing, scheduled for October.

During the trial, the prosecution presented surveillance footage depicting an individual carrying a gas container while walking down Pine Street. This person approached the residence’s porch and subsequently departed, shortly before a fire erupted on the porch. Further investigation by the Galesburg Police Department revealed video evidence from a nearby gas station, the Circle K on Main Street, showing the same individual purchasing the gas tank and fuel. This critical video evidence ultimately led to Denniston’s identification and subsequent arrest. Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin and Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Worby represented the state during the proceedings.

State’s Attorney Karlin issued a statement following the guilty verdict: “The successful outcome of this case can be attributed to the diligent efforts of the Galesburg Police and Fire Departments in canvassing the area for surveillance footage. Additionally, this verdict would not have been attainable without the cooperation of conscientious citizens who came forward with valuable information.”

The crime of Murder carries a potential prison sentence of 20 to 60 years, while the lesser charge of Aggravated Arson is punishable by 6 to 30 years of imprisonment. Denniston will be required to serve 100% of the sentence.
