Monmouth Police Department Investigator Josh Kramer informs Social Security scammers have now branched out to mailing and offers tips on how to identify the false letters:

“You will receive a letter in the mail, it looks official, it is on official Social Security letterhead. What they are claiming is that you have to claim a tax return, they have money for you. If you get these letters, 99.9% of the time I don’t believe the Social Security Administration reaches out to tell you that you have unclaimed money. If you want to look into it, I would look up the proper number for Social Security. Do not go to the website that is on the letter. Don’t call the number that is on the letter. Get the official security administration phone number. I just recommend that if you get that letter in the mail to put it in the shredder.”

The Social Security Administration can be contacted at 1-800-772-1213 or online at www.ssa.gov.
