Mrs. Annetta A. Bowton, 99, of Abingdon, Illinois passed away at 12:37 am Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

Annetta was born June 8, 1924, in Galesburg, the daughter of Lee S. and Vada Arlene (Calkins) Barton. She married James R. Bowton on January 15, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa. After 63 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on September 23, 2003.

Annetta is survived by her son, Daniel (Janet) Bowton of Mahomet, Illinois; her daughter, Majorie Bowton of Abingdon; six grandchildren, Teresa (Chris) Suchomel and Susan Young both of Iowa City, Iowa, Kelly (Michael) Goldberg of Auburndale, Florida, Melinda (Todd) Hull of Effingham, Illinois, Debra Rafferty of Abingdon and Michael Rafferty of Keller, Texas; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and her daughter-in-law, Linda Bowton of Iowa City. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son, Terry, three brothers, Richard, Kenneth and Forrest Barton and grandson, Jimmy Bowton.

Annetta worked alongside her husband and their business, Jim’s Gamble Store, for many years. She had also worked for Hedding Grade School and Shanks Clothing Store. Annetta enjoyed working at the Care Center of Abingdon as a CNA. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and the Harry E. Wiles Abingdon American Legion Auxiliary Post #381.

Annetta had a deep love for gardening and working in her yard. She had mowed her own lawn well into her 80’s and found pure joy with her self-propelled lawn mower. She had a beautiful flower garden that many enjoyed driving by her home to view.

Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 pm Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Graveside services will follow at the Abingdon Cemetery with Rev. Jerimiah Barker officiating. Memorials may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church or to the Abingdon Historical Society.
