Ruth Marie Nelson, 93, of Galesburg, Illinois, died November 13, 2023 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
Ruth was born at home in rural McDonough County, Illinois on October 15, 1930 the daughter of Floyd “Mike” and Lucille Ruth (Nordgren) McNeil. After graduating from high school, Ruth went on to graduate from Brown’s Business College and had a long career working at different locations in Galesburg. She began working at Anderson Florists, then worked for a time at Prudential, and retired as an account representative at First Bank.
Ruth married Leslie DeForrest Nelson on July 19, 1950 in Santa Rosa, California. Leslie preceded her in death on May 16, 1987. Ruth is survived by her son, Carl (Jill) Nelson of Abingdon, Illinois; a stepson, Dr. Donald M. (the late Peggy) Nelson of Creve Couer, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Todd (the late Bobbi) Nelson, Trent (Shawn) Nelson, Tabby (Kevin) Stewart, Brian (Tiffany) Hanslow, Eric (Renee) Nelson, Brent (Angie) Hanslow, James (Jennifer) Nelson, Shane Nelson, Nathan Nelson, and Jennie Guest; 17 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by one brother, Richard F. McNiel; a stepson, Jack L. (Linda) Nelson; and a step grandson, Troy Nelson.
Ruth was an active member of her community. She was a longtime member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society; the Professional Women’s Business Association; Alpha Iota Sorority, and a member of Home Extension. Ruth will be remembered for knack to care for flowers as well as her amazing talent as a seamstress. Ruth made numerous family wedding dresses and bride’s maids’ gowns through the years.
Cremation has been accorded. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. A celebration of life will follow at the Thomas Legacy Center at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Altar and Rosary Society, American Diabetes Association, or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
