With a mission to assist individuals in living independently, the Stone-Hayes Center for Independent Living in Galesburg offers a variety of programs, including youth and family services, home services, independent living skills, peer counseling, and transitioning older adults from the nursing home to being independent, explains Adult Transition Advocate Sarah Nelson:

“If you can live independently safely, safety is our number one concern, and if it is okay with your doctor, we will get you into your own apartment. Then we also assist with applying for SNAP benefits, address changes, and Social Security benefits that come back to the consumer. We purchase groceries for a month. We pay first month’s rent and deposit and then we buy all the furniture, towels, anything that you would need to live on your own, we purchase those items. It is a super great program.”

Additionally, peer groups are held weekly with Stone-Hayes on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 pm and Thursdays at Strom Center in Monmouth from 2:15 to 3:15 pm.
