Here’s the WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024:

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is sophomore wrestler, Alex Gandarilla. Alex’s fantastic season culminated in a spot on the Three Rivers Athletic Conference’s All-Conference list. He was placed on the 190 pound Honorable Mention list after going (30-12) overall on the season. Alex qualified for this year’s class 1A sectional tournament by finishing 2nd in the Knoxville regional tourney.

The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is boys track and field senior, Landon Burns. Landon got his track season off to a great start at the Lincoln Trail Conference Indoor Meet at Knox College. He crossed the finish line in 2nd place in arguably the toughest race in track and field, the 400 meter dash. Landon is also successful in the classroom, as well, as he was recognized with the great honor of being an IHSA All-State Academic Honorable Mention Team member.

The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is boys track and field sophomore, Cody Wade. Cody was the top placing Heat athlete at the recently completed season opening Lincoln Trail Conference Indoor Meet at Knox Colege. He threw the shot put far enough to finish in 6th place. Cody’s toss was just over a foot from being in the top-3 out of 29 participants on the day.

The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is boys indoor track and field junior, Josiah Carter. Josiah won two events at the Sterling 1st Chance Invitational. He jumped his way to a 1st place in the high jump and long jump events. Josiah’s winning height of 6′ 3/4″ puts him just out of the top-10 in the state for indoor track and field, giving him a great chance to be invited to the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet in Bloomington.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is girls track and field freshman, Kennedy Quinn. Similar to her great start to her basketball career, Kennedy’s first high school track meet was just as successful. She took 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the 60 meter dash at the Lincoln Trail Conference Indoor Exhibition at Knox College. Kennedy’s time in the 60 meter race puts her within striking distance of qualifying for the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet.
