The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 914 Hawkinson Ave. on April 28, 2024, at 9:04 AM. The structure is a single-family residence. The response included all three stations and the 11 personnel on duty. Upon arrival, personnel encountered smoke and flames coming from a northwest window. The Fremont Street crew pulled a preconnected fire hose and made entry into the rear of the home and extinguished the fire. Battalion David Farrell established command and the Central Station crew searched the residence for victims, fire extension, and pets. The Brooks Street crew ventilated a North window and conducted a second search of the home. Prior to the arrival of the fire department, the homeowner’s dog escaped. The homeowner’s cat was unharmed; however, their bearded dragon died in the fire. No other injuries were reported.
An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the city. The damages to the home are estimated to be $18,000. The cause of the fire was determined by Galesburg Fire Investigators to be unintentional.
