Media law will be the focus of this year’s Law Day celebration at Monmouth College.

Each May, the College celebrates the national day to promote discussions and education about the law and its role in society. This year, via Zoom, the College will host guest speaker Christopher Terry, a professor at the University of Minnesota’s Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Terry’s talk, “Media Law: Concepts in Action,” will be screened at noon May 1 in Room 272 of the Center for Science and Business.

Terry, who has done more than 100 media interviews about media law and policy, received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in 2012. He spent 15 years as a producer in commercial radio, and his research agenda includes regulatory and legal analysis of media ownership, internet policy and political advertising.

He served for six years as a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before joining the University of Minnesota faculty in 2016. His research has earned top paper awards from the Communication and Law Division of the National Communication Association and from the Law and Policy Division of the International Communication Association.

Terry has received financial support from both the Industry Research Forum of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and from the Center for Information Policy Research. He has also served as a Thrust Four Research Fellow for the Center for Quantum Networks.
