John C. Toal Sr.,84, of Monmouth, IL, died on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at his home.

John was born November 4, 1939 in Monmouth, IL the son of Carroll P. and Bernice Loretta (Shunick) Toal.  He was a lifelong resident of Monmouth graduating from Monmouth High School in 1957 and later attending Monmouth College and Carl Sandburg College.

John married Mary Alice McLoskey at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth on Dec. 26, 1964 and she preceded him in death on May 1, 2014.

John worked in the maintenance department of the Warren County Housing Authority for 27 years before retiring in 2003.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4th Degree member of the Monmouth Knights of Columbus, OSF Holy Family Auxiliary, Warren County Musical Players, Maple Leaf Community Concerts, and the Monmouth Flying Club. He volunteered numerous hours at the Monmouth Airport, 1St Street Armory and the Monmouth. American Legion

Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen (Bruce) Lee; son, Jack (Amy) Toal; both of Monmouth, IL; his grandchildren, Brandon (Tana) Lee, Breayn (Josh) Klausing, Kelsey (Corbin) Shepherd, Kathryn (Tucker) Shepherd, Jessicah (Mitch) Wright, Alec (Mikaela) Toal, Jared Toal, Ashton Toal, and Jace Toal; great-grandchildren, Rowan Toal, Raeley Lee, Brecklynn Lee, Callaway Klausing, Kollyns Klausing, Sawyer Shepherd, Cooper Shepherd, Milah Wright and awaiting 3 future great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Kathleen Wagner of Missoula, MT and Ann Toal of Monmouth; sisters-in-law,  Peg (Lane) McNitt of WA, Sharon (Jerry) Steffel of VA, Mary Toal of IA and Jo McLoskey of CA;  numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brothers Carroll Paul Toal and Raymond Toal; brothers-in-law, Bob McLoskey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Anne Romine

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Monday, June 10, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Monmouth with a Rosary Service beginning at 10:30 am at the church.  Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception School, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or Shriner Children’s Hospital.
