United, Monmouth-Roseville Baseball Fall in Regional Championship

Share

The United Red Storm and Monmouth-Roseville Titan baseball teams were both vying for regional tournament championship plaques. The Red Storm had the tough task of taking on Illini Bluffs and their Division 1 Bradley University recruit starting pitcher, Josh Vaughn. United chose sophomore Ian Leffler. Vaughn was just two weeks removed from striking out all 21 Peoria Christian hitters he faced in a 7-inning perfect game. Vaughn got 18 strikeouts of Red Storm hitters on Saturday in a 2-1 Illini Bluffs victory. Elliott Copeland tripled for the lone hit for United. Leffler threw well, going six innings, giving up only four hits with six strikeouts. United ends their season with a season-record tying 21 wins against 9 losses.

The Titans were at Princeton High School, taking on their long-time rivals, the Rockridge Rockets. The Titans were looking for their first regional title since 2007. It had been since 2011 since the Rockets had hoisted a regional plaque. Rockridge broke open a scoreless game in the top of the 3rd, scoring six runs on just one hit, taking advantage of walks and a hit batsman handed out by Titan pitching. That would be all the runs that Rocket starting pitcher Carsen Dekeyrel would need, as he goes the distance, scattering nine hits in seven innings, striking out 10 Titan batters. Ty Corsaro had two of the nine Titan hits. Monmouth-Roseville ends the year at (14-14).
