Story by Kadin Rogers.
Friday night ended a long offseason of anticipation for Monmouth-Roseville football. Following one of the program’s best seasons last year, which saw the team go 8-1 in the regular season and win an undisputed Three Rivers Conference title, the Titans suited up once again in Aledo taking on a west division rival in the Golden Eagles. Unlike last years contest against MerCo, the Titans got out to a hot start early and grinded out the second half to take a 35-14 win to start the season at 1-0.
The tone was set early by M-R, as after a quick drive that ended in a punt for MerCo, the Titans marched down the field in their usual ground and pound style, finishing the drive in the end zone on a 10 yard score from Lars Bergren. Monmouth-Roseville’s defense stayed as strong as ever, rattling the Golden Eagles into 5 total turnovers in the contest. 3 of those turnovers would be forced by senior defensive back Elliott Rogers who had 3 interceptions in the first half. The Titans offense would help make good on those turnovers, scoring on a one yard run from Landon Montroy, and a 31 yard strike from Clay Casteel to Bergren to take a 21-0 lead into the halftime break.
Monmouth-Roseville found themselves in a familiar position in the second half, with a big lead and playing keep away from their opponent. The Titans added on to their lead two more times on back to back scores from Nick Huston while the Golden Eagles got on to the scoreboard on a touchdown from Tannen Whitehall and finished the game with another touchdown run to bring the final score to 35-14 in favor of Monmouth-Roseville. In the stat book for the Titans, Nick Huston led the way rushing with 213 yards and two scores on 15 carries while Clay Casteel threw a 31 touchdown to Lars Bergren on one of his 3 passes. Mon-Rose will look to keep the good times rolling next Friday night when they have their home opener at Coach Dobry Field against the Orion Chargers.
