Clarence “Sarge” Leonard Sargeant, 81, formerly of Galesburg, Illinois passed away peacefully with his wife and daughter holding his hands and saying the Lord’s Prayer at Medical Lodges in Iola, KS on June 25, 2024.

Sarge was born on August 11, 1942, to Wilbert and Maybelle (Stevens) Sargeant. He was born and raised in East Galesburg and Galesburg and moved to Iola, Kansas in 2021 due to his declining health.

Sarge and Brenda (Crain) Sargeant were married on July 5, 1963, in the East Galesburg Community Chapel and would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in just a few short days.

Sarge worked at Maytag Corporation for 37 years, retiring in 2002. He also worked at Lucky Boy Bakery for 4 years in his early years.

Sarge enjoyed playing cards a few nights a week with all his friends. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox no matter how badly they played. He loved going to the races in Knoxville and even won a trip to the Daytona 500 and had the time of his life.

Sarge especially enjoyed traveling with his wife, Brenda, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he loved so much. Sarge was a member of Central Congregational Church, where he served as a trustee and usher.

Sarge is survived by his wife of the home, Brenda Sargeant; one son, Craig (Lori) Sargeant of Norwalk, Ohio and one daughter, Lori (Mark) Cooper of Iola, Kansas; four grandchildren, Cassie Cooper of Langley, Oklahoma, Jacob Cooper and Ben Cooper of Iola, and Trisha Beck of Norwalk, Ohio and five great-grandchildren, Hunter Cooper, Kayden Blackman, Jayden McLendon, Jarren McLendon & Malaiya Boyd. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gaylord Sargeant and his two sisters, Donna Foster and Sylvia Dobson.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the chapel with Pastor Thomas Colclasure officiating. The burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.
