Bernard “Bernie” Eugene Stomberg, 89, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home at 6:12 pm, Saturday, June 29, 2024.

He was born Jan. 1, 1935, to Leland Frank and Emma Linnea (Hallin) Stomberg.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Loretta (Roberts) Stomberg; his son Ben “Stone” (and Amanda) Stomberg of Galesburg; his daughter Heather Stomberg of Woodridge, Illinois; his grandson Alijah Pedersen of Galesburg; and his “favorite sister” Penny (and Larry) Moore, of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Bernie is also survived by sister-in-law Betty (and Terry) Hicks of Galesburg; sister-in-law Brenda (and Gary) Lindsey of East Galesburg; sister-in-law Patty Roberts of Galesburg, and brother-in-law Rick (and Anna) Roberts of Galesburg. He also is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews, who all meant the world to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Duane (and Carol); brother Jim; and brother-in-law Randall Roberts.

Born at 1:05 am, Bernie was the first baby born in Knox County, Illinois in 1935. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1953. He joined the United States Marines in 1954 and served in the Korean War.

He and Loretta were married Jan. 26, 1974, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Illinois.

Bernie was a retired Teamster, who drove over the road for many years and drove large construction vehicles. He was a “passionate” fan of the Chicago Bears, enjoyed traveling the United States, and spent every free moment fishing, dropping a line in every farm pond and lake he could find.

Bernie will be greatly missed. He will be remembered for his strength of character, strong will and determination in the face of life’s challenges, patriotism, and his unwavering commitment and love for his family and friends. With a unique sense of humor, he always had a colorful one-liner to share, accompanied by a wink.

The family would like to thank the Galesburg VA Clinic and Western Illinois Home Health Care for their services over the past three years; Hospice Compassus for its care and compassion at the end of Bernie’s life; and Family House Peoria.

Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Western Illinois Home Health Care, Hospice Compassus, and Family House Peoria. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
