2024 marks ten years of the Men of Distinction and Women of Character at Carl Sandburg College. Anthony Law, who is the Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion, shares how these two programs came to be:
“We decided that we wanted to give the students on campus at Carl Sandburg College an opportunity to not only give back to the community, but to develop leadership skills that sometimes go with fraternities and sororities at a four year school. I thought it was important to give them as much of the college experience as possible. I knew a group of young men that were coming to Sandburg and thought what a great opportunity to establish this organization, so I thought of Men of Distinction, MOD. The purpose was for them to see themselves as leaders, to see themselves as community members, and to see themselves as change makers. About three weeks later, I had three young ladies walk up to me and ask what is there for us, that is when I established Women of Character.”
The Men of Distinction and Women of Character will celebrate their ten-year anniversary with a Family Fun Day on Friday, August 9th from 5 to 8 pm and a Reunion on Saturday, August 10th with a program at 6:30 pm, followed by dinner and a presentation. Both day’s events will be held at the Cedar Creek Hall, 571 East North Street in Galesburg.
