A part of the School Safety Drill Act, Illinois school districts are mandated to have a cardiac emergency response plan in place. Being a rural school, United Superintendent Tom Hawkins informs staff members will be going through AED and CPR certified trainings:
“When you have those types of events at your school, you have to have a plan in place, so people are not panicking. There is going to be a natural panic anyway, but you want to make sure that things are put in place that you can try to sustain those moments and get to where a first responder is on the scene. We thought it was really important, especially being a rural district, we are fifteen minutes from everywhere it seems like. So, what we are doing is putting a plan in place where we are actually going to start training our staff members and making sure, they are CPR and AED certified.”
Additionally, Superintendent Hawkins shares the United Board of Education approved the applications of nine seniors to graduate at the mid-term this December, which they are still allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies next May with their classmates.
